My Story...

Well hello there, and welcome to my new blog!
As you may notice, this is my first post, and I am so so excited!
I have started this blog to go along with my Youtube channel - youtube.com/RealmOfMakeup, where I post makeup tutorials, reviews, favourites, tags and more.

I will use this first post to write about my story of coming to start this blog. If you have found this blog through my RealmOfMakeup channel or social media this gives you an insight into who I am and why I do this.
If you have not, you may wonder why you should read a random blog post like this. Well I think you should give it a go, take 10 minutes to have a read and find out who I am...for all you know I could be a celebrity in the making, an outlaw on the run, a secret spy ninja, or a humorous pirate...unlikely, but possible! If nothing else it might interest you to follow my blog for future postings...

Since being very young I have always been attracted to the beauty industry. When I was a child in primary school (maybe age 10) when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I answered 'a beautician'. This was after I grew out of the stage when I wanted to be a ballerina, a cowgirl or a tight-rope-walker (lol wtf?!) when I was about 4! Only recently, my dad printed out a file that I saved on his computer as a kid. I had created a brochure for my imaginary beauty salon using Microsoft Publisher, and it was what reminded me that this passion has always been in me. Today, I have no desire to be a beautician as my heart lies solely with makeup, but as I say I was always attracted to the industry.

In secondary school I began wearing and experimenting with makeup. In the early years it was all about panstick foundation, in the wrong shade! It became popular to do two block colours side by side on the lid - don't ask me why! It then grew into adding corresponding glitter on top for an extra pop. We experimented with glitters a lot during this time, and looking back it was probably a bit gaudy, but I suppose this was when my love for colour and eye catching makeup began. As time passed, we thankfully began to learn what was more flattering!

Around 2007, I discovered makeup tutorials on YouTube by panacea81. I remember showing them to my Mom and being so excited by them. I went through and watched all her videos at the time, and tried to copy a few. I then started searching for other makeup looks and discovered some other youtubers. When I then found out about the Coastal Scents 88 palette I just had to have it - it was one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen! In deciding which one to get, I found xsparkage and her video about them, and per her recommendation I bought both the original and the shimmer palettes online from the US.
Now armed with what seemed like all the possible eyeshadow shades I could think of, I became even more obsessed with tutorials and recreating the ones I loved. I created an account so I could subscribe to channels and favourite videos, and since then I have been a complete Youtube Beauty Community addict! More so today than back then I think!

I also believe that learning from Leesha (xsparkage) while I was really getting into makeup nurtured that love for colour in makeup looks - she does amazing colourful and dramatic looks! When she did her Fierce Friday and Wearable Wednesdays I always half watched the WW, but was glued to the screen for the FF! In time that switched, and I became slightly more interested in wearable looks (probably from overloading myself with dramatic makeup). I liked the challenge of creating something different with somewhat 'limited' use of colour and style. Now I think I have a balanced passion for both. I will always drool over artistic, dramatic and colourful looks, but at the same time I am no longer a teen and I have a part-time office job where wearable/neutral looks are more appropriate, so that is what I most often do on myself in my day-to-day life.

In the final years of secondary school I decided that I wanted to be a psychologist, like my father. In my college applications I applied for Psychology as my No.1 and Arts as my No.2. I did not get enough points for Applied Psychology and so did Arts, where I minored in Psychology and majored in English. English was always a strong subject for me, and I enjoyed it. Getting my A1 in English for my Leaving Cert is one of my proud achievements. The love and aptitude for writing runs in the family - my father and my grandfather were/are writers and poets, and my mother is a singer-songwriter and has always been very good at English in a linguistic and grammatical sense.

During this time at college, while continuously watching makeup video after makeup video, I decided that I would do something more with this passion of mine. So I took a makeup course as a way of improving the skills of my hobby and indulging in the world of makeup. I absolutely fell in love. I looked forward to each class and could not believe that I could actually meet and talk with other people who were just as into makeup as I was. Could it be? Another girl who knows what a 217, nose contouring and setting sprays are, and more importantly, was just as interested in them?! In this course we learned the practical skills and basics of applying makeup and lashes, and some specific looks. We also learned about colour theory, the skin, brushes, safety and hygiene practices, and working in a salon.
Once I finished this course I could take the Fashion/Photographic makeup course, where I could focus on various dramatic and interesting looks, having learned the theory. This covered period looks, fashion looks, HD makeup, stencilling, glitter and more.
After that, I took a short course on Bridal makeup and working in the wedding industry.
Within this time I had purchased a Dinair airbrush system (again as per the recommendation of Leesha xsparkage), and so then took a short Airbrushing course.
Needless to say I was falling in love with the idea of actually working in makeup as a job! And it was something I could do 'on the side'. It was also something that allowed me to express my artistic side (again something that ran in the family). I was good at drawing as a child, and good at art in secondary school, but struggled to finish large pieces and projects, as I would become frustrated or bored. Makeup was something that I could be completely creative with and still complete in an hour!

So after I finished my three years of Arts and applied for Psychology through the 'back door', which was very competitive with limited places. I did not get in and I was actually slightly relieved. For one, I was academically tired and by the end of my final year I was ready for a break. For two, I realised that really I wanted to be a counsellor rather than a psychologist. And for three, I could spend some time focusing on becoming a freelance Makeup Artist.
Today, in terms of my career, I am very much in love with doing makeup as my job, and in the future hope to do something in counselling as well. I guess my idea of having makeup 'on the side' and counselling as my main career has kind of flipped around to the opposite.

So now that I was officially a qualified MUA and diving into this dream of mine, I decided to delve into the Youtube Beauty Community more too - to be a part of it on another level. I started my Youtube channel, called RealmOfMakeup - the idea that it is a place for me to talk about  makeup, to do makeup and experiment with looks and products, creating my own little makeup world, or realm!
As with many Youtubers I started with an ok camera, not-so-great lighting and poor camera angles. However I got a new camera for my birthday, bought a tripod and moved in front of a window. I began to get used to speaking to a camera, and still am learning to be more myself and relaxed. Although I am hoping to purchase a good editing software some time in the future, I have improved my editing with what Windows Movie Maker allows me to do! I have also tried to make my videos more personal to me, in the sense that I don't only make videos according to what other Youtubers are doing, or what I think people want. I incorporate what I want to do and talk about. I certainly get ideas from and am inspired by other Youtubers, I do enjoy tags, and I always encourage viewers to leave requests, but I now try to make myself an equal part of that equation. For example, I recently re-read the entire Harry Potter series, and although it has no relevance to current trends or popularity I wanted to do some looks inspired by the Hogwarts Houses, and that's what I did!

Since starting my channel I have had the idea of a blog in my mind. However, I felt that I should take it one step at a time, and get used to what I'm doing on Youtube first. I did dabble in written product reviews on my business MUA facebook page and really enjoyed it. It brought together two loves of mine - makeup and writing (see that's why I talked about loving English!). Since doing those reviews and posts I knew that a blog was on the cards at some stage...and today is the day! I am so happy and inspired by this new outlet to write and chat about makeup, and I hope my readers will enjoy it just as much!

So thank you so very much for reading, and congratulations if you made it to the end!
I hope you follow my blog to join me on this adventure and to be a part of my Realm Of Makeup :)
